PinC - User Manual
Partnership in Coping System of Recovery - User Manual
The manual provides a step-by step description of the PinC system that encourages the use of a person’s existing strategies to cope with their mental health concerns and, where appropriate, to help the person develop new coping skills.
The manual sets out the 8 stages or guided steps of the PinC system:
- establishment of a working alliance that includes the creation of core conditions (empathy, unconditional positive regard and genuineness),
- agreement on goals to be achieved and the means of achieving them,
- identification of concerns,
- prioritisation of concerns,
- identification of coping strategies,
- setting of goals,
- application of coping strategies,
- evaluation of outcome and consideration of further action.

Although written as a series of stages the PinC system is not a linear process in that, in their working alliance, the client and the mental health worker may move back to earlier stages before continuing on.
The system is designed to work in both community and in hospital settings where key worker/case manager/primary nursing and case work systems are operating.
